Different. Posing for Senior Pictures.

The second biggest question after “what should I wear” happens when the person I’m photographing arrives and says “how should I pose?”. Well. Something like that.

Posing is something that doesn’t come naturally. I want everyone to STOP worrying about it. Do you think models have it easy? No. They need the same support and direction and help that everyone does.

Making you look good in photographs is something that takes practice. You and your photographer have to work together to find the style of posing that fits YOU. What works for Tyra Banks is not necessarily going to look good when you do the same pose.

When I’m photographing seniors I say the same thing to everyone: the first 30 minutes are awkward and you are going to feel uncomfortable. That is NORMAL. I play with the light and we move around and try different things until I find a great spot for YOU.

Then we work together on posing. No pressure. If one thing doesn’t work — we’ll try something else.

And then…guess what happens? It sounds weird — but you get a little tired…and bored…and you relax.

THAT’S the moment I’m waiting for. Once that happens — you start looking AMAZING in photographs. Because you stop worrying about you and start BEING you. Does that make sense?

And I’ll start playing with different ideas — some you’ll like and some you won’t. Some will surprise you later. Some of the most awkward poses look the coolest in images. It doesn’t make a lot of sense and I can’t really explain it better than that…but mostly — if you trust me and listen and TRY — you will end up LOVING the result.

That’s the magic of posing.

hollitrue — Couldn't have said it better myself!! :) I totallt agree with you and often tell my seniors: "The less comfortable you are in this pose, the more amazing it looks in print." Love the example shot you have... I'm off to check out the rest of your postings!! :)   ( July 22, 2008 @ 6:26 pm )

Shari Barnes — WELL SAID!!!   ( August 5, 2008 @ 3:38 am )

Eyes are windows…

And Kira is no exception. Her eyes are GORGEOUS! We had a lot of fun today — despite getting…lost…and caught in the middle of a parade…and having to switch locations at the last minute — Kira went with the flow and man… I am telling you… She takes BEAUTIFUL photos.

Here’s her sneak peek (K — I told you this was going to be a cool one!):

Defining Vivacious

I never really thought about how sometimes you meet a person and a word that describes them just flies into your head  — until I met Riley for her senior session yesterday - and she EPITOMIZED vivacious!

She is funny and a FASHION DIVA.   I’m trying to convince her to write to Teen Vogue and be a featured teen.

Here is her sneak peek — and the whole session is something I’m really excited about — can’t wait to share!

Fashion Shoots

The biggest question I get asked when juniors and seniors sign up for a photo shoot is “what should I wear?”.

While my usual advice sounds something like: pack your wardrobe and bring it…

the thing that works the best (perhaps surprisingly) is layers. Hats, jackets, scarves, leggings, suit jackets, tank tops — all work together in a blissful and wonderful way to really make your photoshoot pop.

Check out these behind the scenes pics from the teen vogue photo shoot — to give you an idea of how they mix and match dresses/layers/hats into a fun and interesting look –

And then — call me and we’ll do the same for you! I love fashion shoots!
